Hello speed skating enthusiasts, World Cup 4 is just around the corner and Dad is back again to provide a quick update. Though, this time it may not be as helpful for your fantasy team. Rather than listing off potential free agents or warning you about any weekend schedule changes, I’ve got something else to let y’all know about. Something even more important than informing managers that Joy Beune, Jutta Leerdam, Marek Kania, and a host of other talented skaters won’t be racing this coming weekend. After years of talking about it (though not with any of you fuckers), I’ve finally linked up with a few other familiar faces to start a speed skating podcast. The pod, which is called Life on the Road – A Speed Skating Podcast , is hosted by a trio of former Canadian speed skaters: Gilmore Junio, Jess Neufeld, and Dad. Gilmore is a three time Olympian and someone who has stayed in touch with the Calgary speed skating community since he retired. Him and I have helped out with some of the announcing and entertainment at the past few Calgary World Cups and, whenever we bump into each other at those events, we always end up talking about how cool it would be to start a podcast on speed skating. Ultimately, I really gotta give him the credit for actually getting the ball moving on this one. Jess is another former National Team Skater and proud Manitoban. More importantly, he’s participated in this fantasy league where, if memory serves correct, he got absolutely smoked. Thankfully his fantasy speed skating results weren’t an accurate portrayal of his speed skating knowledge and passion. We don’t really know where this will all end up, but we’re having fun with it and would love for any of y’all to give it a listen. We’ll be doing recaps of World Cups and Olympic Trial events, hopefully interview some World Cup skaters, and generally just want a space to talk about all the cool shit that happens in the world of speed skating. And, to be clear, we only talk about speed skating. None of that short track or inline stuff that other members of the speed skating media seem to cover. We’ll have a decent focus on Canadian content, given our background, but we’re open to taking this thing pretty much wherever seems to make the most sense. We finally got all the pieces together and released our first episode last week, which was a recap of the first two World Cups. We’ve also just put out our second episode, a discussion of World Cup 3. Both episodes can be found on Spotify (and hopefully Apple soon as well, once we figure out how to do that… boomer alert). https://open.spotify.com/episode/2jpmX9BC9iYRBq7DSWa6Sy?si=KcAv77NWSdKgTqcnmGDrbw&t=0&pi=CuVT8UbtTaCwV Please get back to me with any feedback, suggestions, ideas, or literally anything. I don’t know where this will end up and at this point we’re pretty open to suggestions on what shape the pod should take. At the end of the day, we’re just three guys who love the sport and will take literally any opportunity to talk about it. We hope you enjoy listening to these as much as we enjoy recording them! That’s it for now. Racing resumes this coming Friday in Hamar, Norway, with World Cup 4. This means that any roster changes need to be submitted by 11:59 PM Mountain Time on Thursday, December 11 th . That’s in about 1 hour, so if you’re reading this it’s likely too late. Better luck next week, Shitter.   Cheers, Dad
